The former director of the Ohio State University Medical Center warned that collecting cicadas from gardens is dangerous because of the chemicals used, so cicadas should be caught from far away in the forest. Cicadas are found in the midwestern and southeastern parts of the state. The 17-year cycle of the famous Northern Illinois Brood coincided with the 13-year cycle of the Great Southern Brood during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. The same thing is seen again 221 years later. A total of 16 states experience this natural phenomenon.
