According to a News18 mega exit poll, the BJP-led NDA is expected to win at least 21-24 of West Bengal’s 42 assembly seats, a big jump from the 18 it won last time. The state’s ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is expected to shrink to 18 seats from the 22 it won last time. The remaining two seats were won by the Congress, but it is unlikely to score any points this time as it is fighting in alliance with the Left.
In West Bengal, most seats were contested by a three-way battle between the ruling TMC, the opposition BJP, and the CPI(M), which is allied with the Indian National Congress as part of the Indian Union. There has been a major political shift from the left to the right, as evidenced by the BJP’s increase in seats from just two to 18 in the 2019 elections. The CPI(M) failed to win any seats in the state in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Basirhat’s Sandeshkari has been a hot topic this election due to allegations of atrocities against women and land grabbing by now-suspended TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan.
There was fierce fighting in several constituencies in the state, especially in North Kolkata, Asansol, Barrackpore, Medinipur, Darjeeling, Jadavpur and Basirhat.
The eastern states voted in seven phases between April 19 and June 1. West Bengal recorded a consistently high voter turnout in all seven phases of the general elections.
