AUSTIN (KXAN) — University of Texas outfielder Max Bellew ran recklessly around the bases Tuesday, stealing four bases and scoring two runs on two hits in the U.S. Collegiate Varsity Team’s 9-0 win over Chinese Taipei in the International Friendship Series.
Bellew, the cleanup hitter for the U.S. team, had two hits in three at-bats, three runs scored and two walks. He singled to drive in Tennessee’s Dean Curley in the first inning and added another run with a single in the sixth. While continuing to steal bases, Bellew stole two bases in the sixth inning and scored on a wild pitch.
By comparison, Bellew attempted five stolen bases all season with Texas and was successful in three of them.
Florida State’s Jayme Arnold, University of California, Santa Barbara’s Tyler Bremner and University of Georgia’s Alton Davis II combined to throw a no-hitter, improving Team USA to 4-0 this summer. Team USA pitchers recorded 14 strikeouts.
Bellew started three of the four games for the U.S. national team and batted .444 (4-for-9) with four RBI. He is one of the few Longhorns players who have said they will return for a freshman year under head coach Jim Schlossnagel.
The U.S. National Team and Chinese Taipei will conclude their five-game series on Wednesday at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
