Banks and post offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day, but most major restaurant, grocery store and retail chains will be open on the holiday.
Many businesses, including Walmart, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A and Target, will remain open for business this federal holiday, but the stock market will be closed on Thursday.
The origins of the Fourth of July date back to Philadelphia residents marking the first anniversary of American independence with a “spontaneous celebration,” as described by John Adams in a letter to his daughter Abigail, according to the Library of Congress.
However, the holiday did not become an annual celebration until after the War of 1812, when events such as the groundbreaking for the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were scheduled to coincide with the Fourth of July celebrations. Congress passed a law on June 28, 1870, making Independence Day a federal holiday.
Here’s what you need to know about what’s open and closed this Fourth of July.
