Known as America’s Second Independence Day, Juneteenth has been commemorated as a federally recognized holiday since 2021, providing millions of Americans with a paid day off and an opportunity to commemorate the end of slavery.
The holiday commemorates the day in 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger led 2,000 Union soldiers into Galveston Bay, Texas, and proclaimed the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state free.

Is Walmart open on Juneteenth? See hours
Walmart stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Juneteenth, a company spokesperson told USA TODAY, but it’s best to contact your local Walmart or check the online store directory before heading out to the store.
Is Costco open on Juneteenth?
According to Costco’s website, the warehouse will be open on Juneteenth.
Is Target open on Juneteenth?
Yes, Target stores will be open on Wednesday, the company told USA TODAY. Store hours vary by location, so check with your local store for holiday hours.
Will banks, post offices, UPS and FedEx be open on Juneteenth?
United States Postal Service In a statement emailed to USA Today, USPS confirmed that retail trade facilities will be closed and that regular mail delivery to residential and business addresses will not occur on Wednesday, June 19. The agency said Priority Mail Express will be delivered 365 days a year, including Sundays.
UPS and FedEx Pickup and delivery services will be available on Juneteenth. UPS Stores and FedEx Office locations will also be open Wednesday, according to the companies’ websites.
Branch of Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, Citibankand JPMorgan Chase Both companies confirmed to USA Today that the stores will be closed Wednesday. Capital One Cafe will remain open.
