UTEP football coach Scotty Walden said he got to know Minor’s program years ago playing for him on EA Sports College Football and that he was probably more successful than the team was on the field.
The fascination with UTEP is easy to see in the 25 version of the game, in which the Miners shared a stadium entrance clip on Instagram of them running onto Sun Bowl Field for a game against Charlotte (UTEP actually played Charlotte in the Sun Bowl in 2019 and may never play them again in the real world).
The footage shows a packed stadium with close-ups of fans in body paint. “Welcome to El Paso, West Texas,” the announcer yells. As the Miners make their way through the tunnel, the backs of Sione Tongauiha and Dorian Hopkins are clearly visible. Then Emali White leads the team onto the field behind the flag bearer and through the marching band, eliciting a frenzy from the Miners fans.

EA Sports was forced to stop producing college football video games due to the case of Keller v. Electronic Arts Inc. (2013), in which the court ruled that players’ likenesses could not be used in the game if the players had not been paid. The court determined that doing so would violate the rights of all players used in the game.
However, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of compensating players in NCAA v. Alston, so players can now receive compensation for their name, image and likeness rights, allowing the game to continue.
