Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, who won the Patnagar Assembly constituency in Odisha’s Bolangir district, was sworn in as the state’s Deputy Chief Minister along with Prabati Parida on Wednesday.
Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo (67), a native of Bolangir, a former royal family in Patna, defeated BJD candidate Saroj Kumar Meher by a narrow margin of 1,357 votes in the state assembly elections.
Who is Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo?
With a long and illustrious political career spanning over two decades, Kanak Vardhan Singh hails from a politically active family and holds a BA Part I from Delhi University.
Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo’s foray into politics was a natural one given his family background and his own passion for public service.
According to myneta.info, his assets are valued at Rs 673 crore, of which over Rs 78 crore are movable properties and Rs 595 crore are immovable properties. Two criminal cases have been registered against him — one under Sections 188 and 34 and the other under Sections 143, 269, 270, 336 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code.
He served as a minister in the Odisha Congress cabinet from 2000 to 2004 and again from 2004 to 2009, until Naveen Patnaik quit the National Democratic Alliance. He was the state unit chief of the BJP from 2013 to 2016. His wife, Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo, is a Member of Parliament from Balangir.
