Mario. Link. Pikachu. These aren’t just video game characters — they’re some of the most recognizable figures on the planet. For nearly 50 years, Nintendo has been building loyalty to its worlds, and now it’s turning that nostalgia into a global entertainment empire.

The success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide, along with the company’s theme-park collaboration with Universal, is helping create a universe that competes with the likes of Disney.

Watch the video above to learn more about Nintendo’s big bets beyond gaming.
