“Joggers should come down to the knee and cover the kneecap, and in fact the hem of a jogger is in a really flattering position,” Fullerton explains. “This divides the clothed body into two thirds, creating a beautiful proportion that reflects the rule of thirds that artists apply when painting landscapes or portraits. This keeps the body nicely balanced.”
But their flattering effect depends on wearing the pants just right. “The pants should be loose fitting. Fitted pants put you in Capri territory, which is a whole other trend,” advises Fullerton. “A looser silhouette is more elegant, slims the legs and is more on-trend. Whether you choose a flat front or a paper bag style depends on your body type. Both look chic, but a pleated front and Italian diagonal pockets are the perfect way to wear pants for a smart urban setting.”
Of course, what you pair your shorts with matters too. If you choose longer shorts, it’s okay to show a little skin – be it your belly, décolletage, or shoulders. You can even pair them with low-heeled kitten heels, or vice versa for shorter styles. Try a loose-fitting top or longer sleeves to avoid looking like a teenager.
While A-list celebrities favour brands such as Agold, Totem and Citizens of Humanity, the high street also has plenty to choose from, from high-rise Bermudas from Me+M to A-line patchwork trousers from Jigsaw and pleated-front styles from M&S. One of the most popular among fashion editors is Albarei’s denim Bermudas.
