Pakistan suffered a shock defeat to co-hosts USA in a Super Over in Dallas in the opening match, before suffering a humiliating defeat to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Sunday.
The noise and excitement of the capacity crowd on Long Island died down, with Indian fans outnumbering Pakistani supporters when the match finally resumed after a rain delay of nearly an hour.
Rohit Sharma’s India suffered a mid-innings collapse in a two-paced match and finished at a disappointing 119 runs in 19 overs, despite a tenacious performance from Rishabh Pant (42 off 31 balls) who came to bat under overcast skies.
Pakistan, alternately sublime and ridiculous, seemed all but decided with 48 runs to spare with eight wickets to spare, but the ever-effective pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) and Hardik Pandya (2/24) turned India around with some sharp bowling as Pakistan lost a huge number of wickets, 113 for 7 in the 20th over. Pakistan went on to lose the low-scoring thriller by six runs.
This was the second-lowest run ever defended in the Men’s T20 World Cup. It was also India’s lowest run defended in a full T20I tournament and helped them improve their record in T20 international matches against Pakistan to 7-1.
India defeated Ireland by eight wickets in the opening match at the same ground and currently lead Group A of the T20 World Cup with four points and a higher net run rate than the United States, who also have four points after wins over Canada and Pakistan.
Can Pakistan qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8?
Only two teams from each of the four groups can advance to the second stage, so Pakistan will need to win their remaining matches against Canada and Ireland and hope that the results of their other group matches work in their favour to reach the Super Eight.
