Warning: Contains spoilers for “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” finally sees Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Logan (Hugh Jackman) team up together in a violent adventure across the multiverse, leaving room for a potential “Deadpool 4”-style cast reunion in the future.
In the film, Wilson searches for an “Anchor Being” whose mere existence can save the universe from annihilation. His quest leads him to a fallen Wolverine in an alternate timeline, grieving the death of the famed mutant team, the X-Men.
By the end of the film, both heroes are left in a position to return in future projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here’s what we know about a possible Deadpool 4.
Ryan Reynolds jokes that Deadpool 4 won’t be made
Reynolds addressed the possibility of a “Deadpool 4” during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Tuesday, explaining that his family wouldn’t be happy if he were to star in another sequel so soon after “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
“My wife and kids are going to divorce me. I don’t have a prenuptial agreement with anybody. I’m a very wealthy man and I need the money instead so I’m going to be in Deadpool 4,” he said.
While it sounds like he’s completely ruled out appearing in Deadpool 4, the actor is known to be a very playful person during press tours and has yet to confirm whether he’s saying goodbye to the role for good.
Plus, Jackman famously left Wolverine after 2017’s Logan, and look how that turned out.
If Deadpool & Wolverine is a box office success — and does well in its opening weekend — it likely won’t be long before Marvel makes Reynolds a big-money offer to reprise the role in the future.
The door seems open for Deadpool 4 and beyond
At the end of Deadpool & Wolverine, the two heroes finally stop fighting and unite to stop Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) from wiping out the multiverse with Paradox’s (Matthew Macfadyen) time ripper machine.
This selfless act impressed Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) and the Time Variation Authority, and they decided to let Wolverine remain in Deadpool’s world.
In the film’s happy ending, Deadpool reconciles with his ex-girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).
That means Deadpool 4 will be a clean slate if Reynolds and Marvel Studios can find the right story to tell going forward — and if not, there are plenty of other great opportunities for the foul-mouthed hero to show up elsewhere.
In early July, multiple outlets widely reported that MCU veterans the Russo brothers were in talks to return to Marvel to direct Avengers 5, scheduled for release in 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for release in 2027, the latter of which is named after the comic book multiverse crossover event.
These back-to-back movies would be the perfect time for Deadpool to crossover with all the other MCU heroes. Plus, it would be the perfect payoff to the opening scene of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” in which Wilson applies to join the Avengers and fails. Only time will tell.
