Willy Abreu placed on injured list after tripping on dugout steps first seen on NBC Sports Boston
The Boston Red Sox continue to suffer devastating injuries.
Wilyer Abreu was the Red Sox’s latest star to be placed on the disabled list. The rookie outfielder sprained his ankle after tripping on the dugout steps during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park.
Boston coach Alex Cora announced the news during an appearance on WEEI on Tuesday. Jones & Mego and Arcand.
“Actually, I have some bad news for you, Willie. [Wilyer Abreu] “He’s on the IL,” Cora said. “He has a sprained right ankle. We all saw what happened in the dugout in the seventh or eighth inning. He had an MRI yesterday and is going to see a specialist now so we’ll see how bad it is.”

Catcher Tyler Heineman was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to replace Abreu.
Abreu’s unfortunate injury is yet another blow to the Red Sox, who have been without several key players this season. The 24-year-old Abreu was a surefire candidate for AL Rookie of the Year after batting .272/.344/.485 with 14 doubles, six homers and 22 RBIs in 53 games.
Boston was already without shortstop Trevor Story (shoulder, out for the season), right-hander Garrett Whitlock (elbow, out for the season), first baseman Triston Casas (ribs, 60-day disabled list), outfielder Tyler O’Neill (knee, 10-day disabled list), designated hitter Masanao Yoshida (thumb, 10-day disabled list) and second baseman Vaughn Grissom (hamstring, 10-day disabled list).
Bobby Dalbec will replace Abreu as the Red Sox’s starting right fielder in Tuesday’s series opener against the Atlanta Braves, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at Fenway Park.
