A video of a woman calling out TikTok Shop raised awareness about overconsumption and increased marketing advertising.

In a viral video, TikTok users Taryn Lamb (@therealtarnanlamb) called out influencers who are trying to lure internet users into buying products through their TikTok shops.

TikTok Shop is an e-commerce addition to the video app that allows creators to promote and sell items through in-feed videos.

Taryn explains how the “I bought it from the TikTok shop, so I don’t need to buy it” trend is not only harmful, but wasteful.

“I wasn’t planning on buying it in the first place,” Taryn says, writing in the caption, “I’m tired of this hook.”

Taryn’s video, which has garnered more than 20,000 views, sparked a debate about the oversupply of such promotional videos, with internet users agreeing that TikTok shops are becoming more intrusive.

“I will never buy from TikTok Shop,” one user replied.

“Finally someone is speaking up,” another TikToker wrote.

The rise of promotional videos advertising TikTok Shop has negatively impacted TikTok users’ experience on the app: instead of watching educational or entertaining videos, TikTok users’ feeds are flooded with Shop ads.

Taryn isn’t the only TikTok user frustrated by ads, as a recent article from Distractify revealed that users of the app have voiced their frustration, arguing that ads not only make the app less appealing, but also spread a lack of brand trust in the products being sold.

Many of the items listed on TikTok Shop are incredibly low priced, with some items costing as little as $0.50. Because many of the items are manufactured overseas, the low prices suggest a high environmental cost to the products.

The counterfeit goods promoted across TikTok shops encourage fast fashion and consumerism, both of which produce a lot of dirty energy-related pollution and contribute to rising global temperatures. However, there is a solution for people who need affordable fashion: Many are turning to thrifting to score quality items at great prices.

“I started blocking people too because I’m sick of it,” one user wrote.

“As soon as I see a store link I quit,” commented another TikTok user.
