Workshop series to help seniors become tech savvy begins in Jamaica on June 21 – QNS

With just a little help, any senior can become tech savvy.

This Friday, June 21st, Link NYC In collaboration with the Queens Gigabit Center, they will be hosting the first of five “Senior Series” digital literacy workshops to help seniors become proficient with the latest technology. The workshop will begin at 11 a.m. at the Allen Community Senior Citizens Center, 166-01 Linden Blvd. in Jamaica.

The two organizations have partnered of The New York City Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI), Boldyn Networks, and community partner Allen Community Senior Citizens Center are bringing AARP Senior Technology Services to local seniors. The first session, titled “Smartphone Introduction,” will introduce seniors to the world of smartphone technology. Seniors will learn how to use features such as video calling and public transportation routes.

According to a report from AARP, between 2019 and 2023, smartphone ownership among seniors will 77% to 89%. and 71of people aged 50 and over would prefer to receive direct help rather than learning how to use a device on their own.

The Queens Gigabit Center at Allen Community Senior Citizens Center offers free high-speed Wi-Fi provided by LinkNYC, as well as access to laptops and tablets.

Upcoming sessions in the five-month series will include learning about social media, computer and iPad basics, streaming, smart TVs and more.

LinkNYC is a citywide network providing fast, free public Wi-Fi to all five boroughs. Each Link kiosk offers free Wi-Fi, phone calls, device charging, access to social services, and displays content like traffic updates and real-time weather forecasts. LinkNYC has over 15 million Wi-Fi users and has made over 30 million free phone calls; real-time weather, traffic, public art, local information, and more.

All LinkNYC services are free to users and are provided by CityBridge, a joint venture led by Intersection Media and Boldyn Networks.
