🚨 Headlines
⛳️ Yang’s first major: South Korea’s Amy Yang, 34, won the KPMG Women’s Professional Golf Championship by three strokes on Sunday, capturing her long-awaited first major title.
⚾️ Removing sticky substances: Mets closer Edwin Diaz was ejected before pitching Sunday after umpires determined his hands and glove were too sticky. He will serve an automatic 10-game suspension.
⚾️ PED suspension: The same weekend that he made his major league debut, Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez was suspended 80 games for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing drugs policy.
🏈 Venables said: The University of Oklahoma has agreed to a six-year, $46 million contract extension with head football coach Brent Venables, who has a 16-10 record since taking over from Lincoln Riley.
🎾 America’s New Number 1: Tommy Paul won the Queens title in London, becoming the first American man to take the top spot in the competition. Paul moved up one spot to 12th, overtaking compatriot Taylor Fritz.
⚾️ Brutal Loss: The Rockies beat the Nationals on Saturday thanks to MLB’s first walk-off pitch time violation.
🏆 It all comes down to this
The NHL couldn’t have produced a more epic season finale. More attention will be focused on tonight’s Game 7 in South Florida than on a match with so much incredible history and outcome at stake.
Stakes: The Oilers have a chance to miraculously come back from 3-0 down and end Canada’s 31-year Stanley Cup winless streak, while the Panthers can either win their first championship or end the worst collapse in NHL history.
How we got here:
-
Game 1: Panthers 3, Oilers 0
-
Game 2: Panthers 4, Oilers 1
-
Game 3: Panthers 4, Oilers 3
-
Game 4: Oilers 8, Panthers 1
-
Game 5: Oilers 5, Panthers 3
-
Game 6: Oilers 5, Panthers 1
Comeback Kids: The Oilers are the first team in 79 years to overturn a 3-0 deficit to force a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals, and if they win tonight they will become the only team to hoist the Cup after losing their first three games, joining the 1942 Maple Leafs.
The Canadian Curse: It’s been 31 years since a Canadian team last won the Stanley Cup (the 1993 Canadiens), the longest winless streak in Canadian history, but don’t be fooled into thinking that the whole of Canada is rooting for the Oilers.
Ian Mendes of The Athletic$):
To our friends in the U.S. who think we’re obsessed with bringing back the trophy, know that we’re not putting the country on pause to see if the Oilers will bring home the title. Not everyone is nervous on this side of the border. We’re not England waiting for the FIFA World Cup.
An Oilers win, while it would end a 31-year drought, would do nothing to help the rest of the country’s fanbase — cities like Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg, who have never hoisted the Stanley Cup, would not get even partial recognition — and an Edmonton win would only further infuriate Toronto fans, who are nearing a 60-year title drought.
Can Florida bounce back? The Oilers may have momentum, but the Panthers are 8-4 in the playoffs on home ice (and 2-1 in the series), so it would be a surprise to no one if the Panthers win in a big way tonight and claim their first championship.
“This is probably going to be the biggest NHL game in years, so the fans are excited. We can’t wait.” — Matthew Tkachuk, Panthers forward
The wrong kind of history: The Panthers hope to avoid becoming just the sixth team in NHL/NBA/MLB history to lose a best-of-seven series after winning the first three games. NHL teams are 206-4 after blowing a 3-0 lead, NBA teams are 157-0 and MLB teams are 39-1.
⛳️ Schaeffler wins again
Scottie Scheffler will keep winning. His most recent victory came on Sunday at the Travelers Championship, where he held off Protester and Tom Kim for his sixth win of the season.
Rarefied Air: Scheffler is the first player to win six PGA Tour events in the first seven months of the month since Arnold Palmer in 1962. He also is one of just four players in the last 40 years to win six or more times in the same season, joining Tiger Woods (six), Vijay Singh (2004) and Nick Price (1994).
Scottie’s last 10 starts:
-
Arnold Palmer Invitational: Winner
-

-
RBC Legacy: Winner

Very wealthy man: Schaeffler has already earned $27.7 million in prize money in 2024 and could hit $60 million by the end of the season, and that doesn’t even include lucrative off-course endorsement deals with the likes of Nike and TaylorMade.
For those who missed it… Cameron Young shot 59 on Saturday, becoming the 13th player in PGA Tour history to finish under 60. He finished at 11 under with seven birdies, two eagles and no bogeys.
