Vijayawada: The ruling Telugu Desam was in for a shock as the opposition YSRC swept the polls in the Vijayawada Municipal Council standing committee elections by winning all six posts.
TD’s lone candidate, Ramamohan, had secured just 16 votes when the results were declared on Tuesday.
From the YSRC, Ambadipudi Nirmala Kumar (2nd category), Bimisetty Pravalika (3rd category), Bapati Koti Reddy (33rd category), Md Irfan (41st category), Valli NDS Murti (33rd category) and Esarapu Devi (57th category) emerged victorious.
Among the YSRC candidates, Devi secured 47 votes, Murti and Irfan 45 votes each, Koti Reddy 46 votes and Pravalika and Nirmala Kumar 47 votes each.
Chief Election Officer and VMC Chairman Dr Mahesh supervised the elections at the Assembly Hall on Tuesday and handed over declaration certificates to the six successful candidates.
YSRC has 49 councillors and a majority in the VMC council. TD, on the other hand, has 13 councillors, including one who switched from YSRC to the BJP and is also a CPM councillor. Meanwhile, one councillor’s post is lying vacant following the resignation of Kesineni Sweta. TD contested one post after its plea to Mayor Rayana Bagya Lakshmi to be allotted the post was rejected. YSRC contested all the six posts.
Of the 63 eligible voters, 59 people voted. CPM MP Boi Satya Babu did not vote. Several YSRC members, including House Leader Venkata Satyanarayana, Kalapala Ambedkar and Bali Govind, abstained from voting.
