Frankenmuth junior Derrick Simmons has already made an impression as one of the top returning football linemen in the state.
At Friday’s Davison Twilight Classic, Simmons was highlighted as also ranking among the top track and field athletes in the state.
The 6-foot-3, 270-pound junior won the shot put and discus at the meet in an effort to rank in the top five in the state this season. His winning shot of 59 feet, 4.5 inches ranks third in the state this season regardless of division. He also won the discus with a score of 171-9, which ranked fifth in the state.
Simmons wasn’t the only Frankenmuth player to compete in the Davison tournament. Logan Lipka won the 110 meter hurdles (:15.33) and 300 meter hurdles (:41.44), adding to the Eagles’ 1,600 meter relay victory (3:27.01) with Jared Watchoon, Carson Knoll and Riley Hubbard. Ta.
Watchoon, who won the 800-meter relay in 1:57.10, also competed in the winning 3,200-meter relay (8:02.28) with Brett Magnus, Noll and Landen Wise. Mount Pleasant’s Zay McGinnis won the long jump (19-10).
In the college division, Midland Dow’s Zachar Jurka won the 300 hurdles (:40.41).
In the elementary division, Calo’s Logan McGarry won the shot put (59-4.5) and discus (134-5), while teammate Trace Engelman won the 300 hurdles title (43.15). Engelman teamed with Matthew Pattullo, Ethan Lunsford and Jacob Moore to win the 1,600 relay (3:36.84).
In the women’s competition, Midland Dow’s Emma Thomas starred in the sprints in the college division. Thomas won the 100 (:12.25), second in the 200 (:25.90), and first place in the 400 (:58.39). Victoria Garces led Dow to victory in the 3,200 meters (10:37.26), and Dow’s Emily Bonter took first place in the shot put (35-0).
Frankenmuth’s Natalie Foltz won her first two championships in the Intermediate School division, winning the 1,600 relay (5:05.83) and anchoring the winning 3,200 relay with Mary Richmond, Lucy Konzelman and Caitlin Miller ( 9:32.02). Frankenmuth’s Madison Patten added a win in the pole vault (10-6).
Mount Pleasant won three games in the medium school division. Lauren Gilbert (16.16 seconds) in the 100 hurdles, Aviona Bailey (47.37 seconds) in the 300 hurdles and Gisele Wiitanen (4-11) in the high jump.
Jenna Sweeney of Leith had two wins in the small school division, winning the 1,600 meters (5:25.08) and 3,200 meters (11:38.05).
Caro’s women’s team won the 400-meter relay in 53.99 seconds (Jordyn Thomas, Normandy Geiger, Scarlett Fisher, Nahaira Watkins) and the 3200 relay in 10:14.10 (Faith Swenner, Rachel Walch, Paige).・Heron) won the relay race. , Kaya Vrable).

Akron Fairgrove Invitational: Millington won the Akron Fay Grove Invitational with 151 points, defeating Mayville with 126 points. Chloe Basner led the Cardinals with first place scores in the 100 (13.34) and 200 (27.85). Coleman Softball Invitation: Coleman lost 12-3 to Traverse City St. Francis in the first game of the Coleman Softball Invitational, with Ellie Johnson leading the Comets with three hits. Nevaeh Chaffee added two runs on two hits, including a triple. In the second match, Isabelle Deal won the match with a 10-3 victory over Capac. Diehl allowed six hits, one earned run, and one walk, giving up seven hits in six innings. Madison Miller and Victoria Kennedy each had three hits, and Eliza Lewis and Chaffee each added two hits. Chaffee also scored three runs with two RBIs and a home run.
