A new form of ice, referred to as ice XXI, has been discovered under extreme pressure at room temperature. The discovery was made using a diamond anvil, which subjected the ice to a pressure of 20,000 atmospheres, or approximately two gigapascals. The exact methods and findings of the discovery vary, but it is reported that ice XXI is a high-density ice that forms under intense pressure at room temperature.
