A plague outbreak is believed to have occurred in Siberia around 5,500 years ago, killing hunter-gatherers in the region. Ancient dna has revealed evidence of this outbreak, which is considered to be the earliest known plague outbreak. The discovery was made through the analysis of ancient graves and dna from hunter-gatherer cemeteries near Lake Baikal.
