CIRA has qualified certain ceramic matrix composite (CMC) structures for the reusable Space Rider. The qualified structures include a CMC body flap and nose, as well as control surfaces, which have passed various tests such as plasma and dynamic structural qualification. These tests have demonstrated the durability of the CMC materials under certain conditions, including hypervelocity impact and high-heat testing.
