A cave has provided insight into the factors influencing extreme rainfall in southern Brazil. The cave's record suggests a connection between this rainfall and both Antarctica and El Niño. However, it is unclear if this finding is specific to southern Brazil or if similar patterns are observed in other regions, such as southeast China, where regional activity of tropical cyclones may also be a factor.
