A new dataset has been released that maps global city and town boundaries in high resolution from 2000 to 2022. The dataset, derived from the GLC_FCS30D product, may be used to study various aspects of urbanization, such as urban cooling demand and sustainable transportation transitions. Its relationship to other existing datasets on urban and rural settlements is unclear, with some reports indicating potential discrepancies in estimates of urban land.
