Ancient dna research suggests that dogs were domesticated nearly 16,000 years ago, prior to the development of agriculture. The oldest evidence of domestic dogs has been found in europe and türkiye, with dogs widely distributed across western eurasia during the palaeolithic era. The discovery pushes back the previously thought timeline of dog domestication by around 5,000 years.
