Research suggests that BAK/BAX macropores play a role in mitochondrial herniation and mtDNA efflux during apoptosis. The relationship between mitochondrial outer membrane rupture and various cellular processes, including ototoxicity and autoimmunity, is being explored. The mechanisms of mitochondrial DNA release and its potential consequences are the subject of ongoing study.
