The vendors have held a rally and called for a bandh, or shutdown, to demand an end to the evictions, with some alleging that their belongings were seized without advance notice. Thousands of vendors are reported to have participated in the protests, which appear to be in response to a campaign to clear footpaths, referred to as the Safe Footpath Campaign.
