Guided hikes are available to explore the Burgess Shale fossils in the Canadian Rockies, a UNESCO site. The fossils, some of which are among the oldest on Earth, can be found in Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park near the Alberta-British Columbia border. However, access to some areas, including a trail on Mt. Stephen, has been restricted to protect the fossils, and hiking permits to one peak have been stopped due to fossil thefts.
