A genomic epidemiology study has been conducted on the 2025 mpox epidemic in Sierra Leone. The study's findings suggest that there may have been cryptic transmission and under-ascertainment of cases before the epidemic was detected. The global mpox situation is described as an ongoing emergency with evolving clade dynamics and rising health risks, amid calls for improved diagnostic tools and surveillance capacity.
