The number of meningitis deaths worldwide is reported to be over 250,000, with some outlets also noting concerns about rising youth deaths and declining progress in reducing overall mortality. The World Health Organization has launched guidelines on meningitis diagnosis, treatment, and care, amid warnings about increases in vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks.
