A new method of glacier mapping using deep learning has been developed, which reportedly matches the accuracy of expert delineation. This technology has been applied to create a glacier inventory in Tajikistan and may also be used to study glacier-related phenomena such as glacier collapse and glacial erosion rates. The use of deep learning for glacier mapping appears to be a growing area of research, with potential applications in various regions, including High Mountain Asia and the Tibetan basin.
