Research has identified compounds that inhibit lipid synthesis in mammalian cells. Dinapinones, produced by a fungus, have been found to inhibit triacylglycerol synthesis, although the specific fungus is reported as either Penicillium pinophilum or Talaromyces pinophilus. Additionally, a different compound, bafilomycin L, produced by a marine-derived Streptomyces, has been found to inhibit cholesteryl ester synthesis.
