Research on the Y chromosome in Drosophila males suggests that epigenetic conflict on a degenerating Y chromosome may increase the mutational burden. However, other studies on different organisms, such as fungal pathogens and anther-smut fungi, have explored different aspects of chromosome dynamics and toxicity. The relationship between Y chromosome degeneration and sex-specific differences in longevity is unclear, with one study finding no contribution to such differences.
