There has been a significant increase in the number of foreign students in Japan who need help learning the Japanese language, with some reports indicating a three-fold increase over 20 years. The number of students requiring Japanese language support has more than doubled in 15 years, with a record number of students now needing assistance. The exact number of students in need of Japanese language instruction is reported to be at least 84,000 at public schools.
