Fossils of a newly identified sea cow species, Salwasiren qatarensis, have been discovered in Qatar's desert. The findings suggest that sea cows have been engineering the Arabian Gulf's seagrass ecosystems for over 20 million years. The discovery sheds light on the history of the area, which was once home to a large sea cow community and is now a desert region with a significant fossil bed.
