Fatal lidocaine poisonings have nearly tripled over the past decade. The increase in lidocaine-related deaths and poisonings may be driven by high-dose emergency iv use, although the exact cause is not universally agreed upon. Reports of serious systemic toxicity after application of topical lidocaine have also been noted.
