Researchers have designed a next generation multi-epitope vaccine candidate against Shigella boydii using immunoinformatics and a hierarchical subtractive proteomics approach. Similar approaches have been used to design vaccine candidates against other diseases, including viruses and cancer. The use of immunoinformatics and various computational methods appears to be a common thread in the design of multi-epitope vaccines against a range of targets.
