Research is being conducted on the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, focusing on the mechanical environment of the fault and asperity origin. Studies are exploring various factors that may have contributed to the earthquake's complexity, including fault heterogeneity, stress recovery, and the role of weak materials. The relationship between preseismic, coseismic, and postseismic fault ruptures and other seismic activity is also being examined.
