A rare intermediate mass black hole, referred to as NGC 6099 HLX 1, has been observed. The black hole appears to be consuming a star, with some reports suggesting it is a "free-floating" black hole, although the details of the event are not entirely clear. Observations of the phenomenon have been made using NASA's Hubble and Chandra telescopes, and have been visualized in animations.
