Research suggests that mesoscale eddies enhance the ocean's uptake of carbon dioxide. However, the role of other factors, such as biological carbon fixation and southern ocean circulation, in the ocean's carbon uptake is also being studied. The relationship between the ocean and atmospheric CO2 levels appears to be complex, with some areas potentially experiencing decreased CO2 uptake, or "holes", under certain conditions.
