A quiescent black hole's mass has been inferred from the movement of orbiting stars. Reports also suggest the possible discovery of a dormant black hole in another galaxy, as well as unusual activity from the Milky Way's supermassive black hole. The relationship between black holes and their surroundings, including stars and gas clouds, is being studied, with some findings appearing to contradict or puzzle astronomers.
