A study suggests that ancient sea sponges may have been the first animals on earth. The research, which analyzed chemical fossils and 541-million-year-old sea sponge fossils, provides evidence supporting this theory. The findings indicate that sea sponges, possibly ancestors of modern demosponges, may have been among the earliest living creatures on the planet.
