More than 700 people have crossed the Channel in small boats, with reports indicating this may be the largest single-day total this year. There have been attempts to stop these crossings, with French police claiming to have halted two thirds of small boats bound for the UK in May. A death has occurred on one of these crossings, resulting in a manslaughter arrest.
