A proposed anti-conversion law in Maharashtra has been cleared by the state cabinet, with the aim of preventing forced conversions, particularly in cases of interfaith marriages. The law would reportedly require couples to obtain family approval and could render marriages invalid if force, deceit, or inducement are used to convert a partner. Civil society groups have come out in opposition to the law, warning that it could threaten women's autonomy and constitutional freedoms.
