Research has identified areas, often rural, where access to legal services is limited, referred to as "legal deserts". These areas are being studied and reported on by various institutions, including Iowa State University, which found that more than half of rural counties are affected. The concept of "legal deserts" appears to be analogous to "food deserts", where access to basic necessities is scarce, and is being examined in several states, including Michigan and Ohio.
