Several north east towns had competed for the Town of Culture bid, but were unsuccessful. It appears that other towns, including Grimsby, were more successful in their bids. The outcome of the Town of Culture 2028 competition is unclear, with some areas, such as the west midlands, also being shut out of the shortlist.
