Research has been conducted on the neural correlates of deficits in humor appreciation in individuals with gelotophobia. The study found a dissociation between the processing of humorous and monetary rewards in certain areas of the brain. This suggests a difference in how the brain processes humor and other types of rewards in people with gelotophobia.
