A new species of Spinosaurus has been named from fossils found in the desert, with some reports describing it as having a distinctive crest, variously referred to as sabre-crested, scimitar-crested, or blade-crested. The discovery was made in the Sahara Desert, with some outlets noting it is the first new Spinosaurus species in over a century. The species has also been referred to as the "hell heron", although the basis for this nickname is not clear.
