A nuclear reactor for a mars outpost may be ready to launch as early as 2022. However, other reports suggest that space nuclear power systems and nuclear propulsion for mars missions may not be launched until 2028. NASA appears to be planning for nuclear power to be used in space, with potential applications including a moon base and a mars mission.
