Researchers have used repeated multibeam bathymetric surveys to study seafloor displacement caused by the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. The surveys have provided insights into seafloor deformation and displacement in the northern Japan trench. However, it is unclear if the findings are specific to the Tohoku-Oki earthquake or also applicable to other seismic events, as some studies mention different earthquakes, such as the Maule megathrust earthquake.
