Seismic evidence has been found offshore southwest Iberia, suggesting oceanic plate delamination may be occurring in the area. This phenomenon is being studied as a possible cause of significant earthquakes in the region, including those that have affected Portugal. The discovery may be related to a newly identified subduction zone or tectonic fault forming off the Iberian Peninsula.
