Research on Alzheimer's disease has found reduced expression of the CB1 cannabinoid receptor in both human patients and transgenic mouse models. Studies using animal models, including rats and mice, suggest that modulation of the cannabinoid system, including CB1 activation, may have a positive effect on cognitive and social deficits associated with the disease. The role of the cannabinoid system in Alzheimer's is being explored further, with some studies investigating its potential to counteract stress and neuroinflammation.
